Chelsea reached an agreement to buy Sevilla defender Daniel Alves on Tuesday, reportedly paying about $45 million for the Brazil right back.

The transfer also included Alves agreeing to a four-year contract to play at Stamford Bridge.

Sevilla left Alves off its roster for Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens, keeping the 24-year-old defender eligible to play for another team in European cup competitions.

Chelsea club chief executive Peter Kenyon reportedly met with Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez in Madrid to close the deal. The acquisition would allow Chelsea to complete the transfer of Arjen Robben to Real Madrid, which has been courting the Dutch winger throughout the summer.

Sevilla already had rejected multiple offers for the Brazil defender, the highest reportedly being $48 million.

Alves has been part of Sevilla's most successful run in nearly 60 years, winning consecutive UEFA Cup titles the past two seasons.

It also leads Real Madrid 1-0 on aggregate in a quest for its first Spanish Supercup. The second leg is to be played Sunday.

"Without him, the team will lose a lot. He's not a footballer you can forget so easily," striker Frederic Kanoute said. "You can understand though - there's been talk of him leaving for the past two years and no one has bought him."

Sevilla paid Brazilian club Bahia euro1 million for Alves in 2002. He has scored 11 goals in 160 league games for the Spanish side.
