Manama:
Bahrain was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Thailand on Thursday in the Asian World Cup qualifier. It's a result that leaves them top of Group A with five points from three matches while Thailand remains bottom of the group two points.
Bahrain's German coach Wolfgang Sidka was confident about the home game. And his team opened the scoring from that free kick in the 17th minute. The home crowd was quite naturally delighted.
Thailand should have levelled the score just before the interval from a free kick, but Dusit Chalesman's powerful left-footer was saved by the Bahrain keeper.
Thailand were still looking for the equalizer in the second half and in the 57th minute, Boriban Tanichai set up the opportunity of a header, but Pituratana failed to make contact as he dived in.
Thailand continued on the offensive a long through ball in the 63rd minute and the Thai captain Kiattisuk Senamuang had just the keeper to beat. The scores were at 1-1 and that's how the match ended.
Bahrain however still leads the Group with five points from three matches, while Thailand remain at the bottom with two points from three matches. Only the group winner will qualify automatically while the two-second placed teams from Group 1 and 2 go into a playoff with the winner taking on a European team in a playoff.
And in Group 2, China have a comfortable lead having won both their matches till now, Qatar currently in second place followed by UAE and Uzbekistan.
