London:
High-flying Everton was beaten 2-1 by struggling third division side Shrewsbury Town in the upset of the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Nigel Jemson scored the 89th minute winner and the 38th minute opener at Shrewsbury's home ground of Gay Meadow. Everton fielded a strong side, but substitute Niclas Alexandersson scored the only goal for the Toffees.
Shrewsbury has the worst defensive record in the third division, conceding 47 goals this season and is ranked 19th out of 24 teams. The club, on the Wales border in central England, has never been in the top division of soccer. Everton is fifth in the Premier League.
In the three Premier League match-ups in the world's oldest knockout competition, last season's runner-up Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 1-0 and two goals each from Matt Jansen and Dwight Yorke gave Blackburn a 4-1 win over Aston Villa.
Bolton drew 1-1 with Sunderland, earning a replay game. Later, Southampton hosts Spurs.
Defending champion Arsenal, Manchester United, Leeds, West Ham, Charlton and West Bromwich Albion all won through to the fourth round.
Manchester United beat division one leader Portsmouth 4-1 with a curling David Beckham free-kick and two penalties from Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Van Nistelrooy, back after missing two games with an injured toe, converted penalties in the fifth and 81st minutes.
Beckham's 17th minute free-kick had little chance of being saved by Portsmouth 'keeper Shaka Hislop. Paul Scholes scored United's fourth, collecting a long range pass and lobbing it over Hislop in the 90th minute.
Arsenal beat third division Oxford United 2-0. Dennis Bergkamp's 15th minute chip over Oxford 'keeper Andy Woodman was his 100th goal for Arsenal, a club he joined in 1995. Oxford defender Scott McNiven scored an own goal in the 67th minute.
Chelsea's Mario Stanic scored after 38 minutes over Middlesbrough, collecting Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's cross to drive a low shot inside the near post. The home side held on after goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was sent off in the 64th minute for violent conduct after a goalmouth scuffle. Ed de Goey was sent on in goal.
Both teams enjoyed a good run in the competition last season, with Boro losing to eventual winners Arsenal in the semifinal and Chelsea losing in the final itself.
Blackburn won with two goals apiece from Jansen and former Villa star Yorke. Jansen's 16th minute goal, taking advantage of poor Villa defending, was his first since he nearly died in a preseason motorcycling accident. He added the second in the 60th minute. Juan Pablo Angel scored for Villa.
At Bolton, Michael Ricketts poked the ball into the net in the 18th minute to give Bolton the lead before Kevin Phillips scored to ensure a replay.
West Ham scored its first home win in any competition this season in a last gasp 3-2 win over first division Nottingham Forest at Upton Park.
Jermain Defoe rescued West Ham. Forest was ahead 2-0 thanks to Marlon Harewood and Andy Reid, but the lead was pegged back by Defoe, then Joe Cole before Defoe's 83rd minute winner.
Leeds beat third division club Scunthorpe 2-0 after Mark Viduka converted a penalty and scored a lofted goal.
Charlton defeated third division Exeter 3-1 with two goals from Jonatan Johansson and a Jason Euell penalty. Brazilian defender Santos Gaia scored for Exeter.
Transfer-listed Danny Dichio scored three goals in the first 19 minutes to give West Bromwich Albion a 3-0 win over first division Bradford City. (AP)
