Highbury:
Champions league action on Tuesday night had Arsenal hosting Greek side Panathinaikos at Highbury. Arsenal with just one win from three matches had very few options but to try and win this one, in order to make it to the second round.
Adding to Arsenala€™s misery was having to play without first choice keeper David Seaman who was laid up with a shoulder injury. The Greeks who had not lost a single match in the champions league this season started on a positive note, with Angelis Basinas's cross finding Michael Konstantinou. Unluckily, his sliding effort went wide.
In the 23rd minute Patrick Viera finding Thierry Henry with a great through pass, chipped the ball over the keeper as the home side took the lead. Five minutes later Emmanuel Olisadebe was bought down in the danger area by Matthew Upson as the referee signalled a penalty.
Basinas then took the spot kick but Richard Wright making his European debut dived to his right and pulled off an amazing save.
Arsenal could not hold on to their lead for long. Five minutes into the second half, Olisadebe got a lucky deflection that beat Wright and found the back of the net for the equaliser for Panathinaikos.
In the 52nd minute and Sylvain Wiltord was clumsily bought down in the danger area by Kyrgiakos as Arsenal got themselves a penalty.
Henry Cooly converted the spot kick after sending the Greek keeper the wrong way as Arsenal took the lead once again. Olisadebe who looked the most threatening came close again in the 56th minute, his shot from just outside the penalty area clipping the post. But Arsenal would hold on for the life-saving 2-1 win, their second win from four matches.
In other results, Liverpool beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1.
