Brazil beat Chile 3-2 on penalties to enter the quarters of the FIFA World Cup 2014. Both teams were locked 1-1 after extra time had been played out. Brazil have made it to the last eight in all editions since 1994.

00:24 (IST): Diaz makes it 2-2 and Neymar takes his shot. He finds the target and it's 3-2 to Brazil.
00:23 (IST): Hulk can't get past Bravo and Chile are fighting hard.
00:22 (IST): Chile get their first penalty goal and Brazil lead 2-1 with two penalties left.
00:20 (IST): Cesar does it again! Two penalties apiece and Brazil lead 1-0. Marcelo converts his spot kick and Brazil are ahead 2-0.

23:59 (IST): Both teams showing a little desperation as they hope to get late winner.
23:53 (IST): The second half of extra time begins and Neymar's header in the second minute almost gives Brazil the much needed goal.
23:47 (IST): Dani Alves booked for a foul in the final minute of the first half of extra time. The half is over and nothing to choose from either of the teams as the score remains the same.
23:42 (IST): The last time Brazil played in extra time was against Netherlands in 1998. They won 4-2 on penalties.
23:39 (IST): After Ramires brings down Sanchez in the 95th minute, Marcelo Diaz goes for goal from an incredible distance with the resulting free kick and it flies miles wide.
23:32 (IST): The first half of extra time begins and both Brazil and Chile will want to avoid taking this game to penalties.
23:24 (IST): 90 minutes are not enough to separate the two teams. It's still 1-1 and now 30 minutes of extra time will decide the fate of the game and there is a chance of a penalty shootout.
23:21 (IST): Three minutes of stoppage time added as both teams go for goal.
23:14 (IST): Hulk almost gets a certain winner with 6 minutes to play but Bravo's save ensures that it is still 1-1.
23:12 (IST): Neymar nearly gives Brazil the lead in the 80th minute. With less than 10 minutes to play, the match looks set to head into extra time.
23:05 (IST): Chile have warded off wave after wave of Brazil attacks in the second half. Both teams are aware that a goal at this stage drives home the advantage.
23:02 (IST):Â There are 18 minutes left to play and a high possibility of this game going into extra time is on the cards.
22:55 (IST): Cesar makes an awesome effort to stop a certain Chile goal in the 64th minute. Brazil living dangerously as the match nears extra time.
22:52 (IST): Both teams playing some attacking football as tackles fly in all directions. A goal now would mean an advantage to either team.
22:45 (IST): Hulk finds the back of the net in the 55th minute but the referee says he handled the ball while collecting the ball. So it's still 1-1 between Brazil and Chile. Hulk gets a yellow card.
22:39 (IST): A wild shot in the 50th minute goes well wide for Brazil and Claudio Bravo has not much to do as he lets it go.
22:36 (IST): The second half gets underway with both teams locked at 1-1. Both teams looking for an early lead in the second half.
22:18 (IST): So that is the end of the first half. It is Brazil 1 Chile 1. David Luiz and Alexis Sanchez scored for their respective teams and the prospect of an exciting second half looms large.
22:10 (IST): Brazil trying to make inroads and are creating problems for the Chilean defence.
22:03 (IST): GOAL! Alexis Sanchez draws Chile level in the 32nd minute. He gets on the end of a pass inside the box and fires into the bottom left corner. The goalkeeper is helpless to stop it.

21:57 (IST): Neymar makes a dangerous run in the 25th minute and threatens for a moment. However, his weak effort is well off target and Chile have no cause for worry.
21:51 (IST):Â GOAL! David Luiz scores his first international goal to give Brazil the lead in the 18th minute. The ball slips through the box to him and he blasts it inside the right post, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

21:41 (IST): Brazil have lost only one of their last 10 World Cup matches against South American opposition.
21:38 (IST): Marcelo creates Brazil's first real chance but shoots wide in the 6th minute. Brazil testing Chile's defence in the opening minutes.
21:35 (IST): The referee Howard Webb also officiated in the 2010 Round of 16 match between the two matches.
21:32 (IST): The referee blows the whistle and the match kicks off! Both teams playing with huge expectations weighing on them.
21:23 (IST): Both teams coming out as the national anthems are played. The noise created by the fans clearly reflects the mood inside the stadium.

Can Chile Ruin Brazil's Party?
Groups of Chilean fans moved about the streets here on the eve of their team's game against Brazil. Some were on foot, some rode in packed cars with the red, white and blue flag of Chile fluttering from windows, and many yelled their familiar chant, "Chi Chi Chi, Le Le Le," while locals looked on, distinctly unamused.
The Brazilians have been wonderful in hosting their first World Cup since 1950, but the Chileans are bent on repaying that hospitality with the unthinkable: knocking Brazil out of its own tournament in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
If Brazilians lose interest upon their team's being eliminated, it would subtract a large supply of ready-made pageantry and sizzle from what has evolved into a theatrical tournament. On Thursday, when the Brazilian national team arrived on a chartered flight from its base outside Rio de Janeiro, fans lined the streets to greet the bus along the route to the hotel. (Read more)

'Neymarmania' grips Brazil
"First comes God, then family and then Neymar," says Rayellen Andrade, 17, wearing the yellow Brazil team jersey with her idol's name across the back.
She's among the tens of thousands of groupies known as "Neymarzetes," who worship the Brazil and Barcelona forward on both sides of the Atlantic as if he were a Justin Bieber in football cleats.
"Neymarmania" is sweeping across Brazil ahead of the team's World Cup last-16 clash with Chile on Saturday. The face of Neymar, who changed haircuts and hair colour during the tournament before sporting a blond top, is everywhere: On advertising billboards, television commercials and in the hearts of his admirers. Nervy Brazil Kick-Start FIFA World Cup Knockouts
Brazil are nervously heading into their World Cup last 16 clash with Chile on Saturday, while Uruguay must learn to live without Luis Suarez as they tackle the knockout stage.
The 16 remaining World Cup teams have still not recovered from their group battles, but the second round quickly gets underway with the Brazil-Chile game in Belo Horizonte at 0930 pm IST and Colombia-Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro at 0130 am IST. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari acknowledged the mounting pressure to perform on home territory.
"It is understandable that one should feel uncomfortable and anxious, especially when you get to the knockout stage. We can't afford to make a mistake," Scolari said. (Read more)
