Striker Wayne Rooney is shattered after England's ouster from FIFA World Cup 2014. The Manchester United player who scored his first World Cup goal ever in the match against Uruguay took to Facebook and apologised to fans after his team was knocked out following two successive defeats. Rooney - under fire for his lackluster form - wrote on his official Facebook page that despite being confident, England failed to work out its strategies in Brazil. "Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup," read his message. "Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. Sorry to all the fans who travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!"
England lost its first match to Italy and the defeat was followed by another against Uruguay. Just eight days into the tournament, England's survival depended on other results but Costa Rica's one-goal thriller against Italy ensured the final nail in yet another World Cup coffin for the Three Lions.
While the British press has ripped the team apart for its shambolic performance - Daily Mail called the players 'Smiling idiots who are just happy to be at the party' - the players and coach themselves are battling hard to come to terms with the early exit. The performance - while shameful - is on the lines of how the English side has performed in World Cups repeatedly. The last time the team won the title was in 1966.
