Liverpool received a reminder of how tough life will be without last season's two leading goalscorers in a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
Gabriel Agbonlahor put Villa in front after 11 minutes at Anfield and the second-placed visitors clung on to preserve their unbeaten start to the season.
With Daniel Sturridge sidelined for up to three weeks with a thigh injury, it meant Liverpool started a game without the England striker or Luis Suarez, who was sold in the offseason to Barcelona, for the first time since December 2012.
Mario Balotelli was brought in by Liverpool last month to provide additional firepower but he appeared to spend much of the first half either being kicked or trying to avoid being kicked by Philippe Senderos.
