David Warner's brawl in the Walkabout sports bar here is dominating English media headlines, virtually paling into insignificance Saturday's upcoming India versus Pakistan ICC Champions Trophy clash at Edgbaston. (David Warner suspended till first Ashes Test)
Australia's performance in the Champions Trophy so far has been lukewarm. After Wednesday's washed out match against New Zealand, the defending champions have a point from two games but it's not their cricketing abilities that's grabbing headlines.
Leading newspapers and TV channels are intensely 'investigating' the brawl and trying to probe what concoction was responsible for Warner's over-the-top behavior. The Telegraph, well respected in the UK, has come out with its exclusive story revealing the heady mix that the explosive Aussie drank before 'taking on' England's young batsman Joe Root.
The paper's website quotes a Walkabout barman who served the Australian team, frequent visitors at this hotspot on Birmingham's Broad Street. Warner was served Jagerbombs and vodka Red Bulls, apparently one of Warner's favourite cocktails.
Jagerbomb is a bomb shot cocktail originally mixed by dropping a shot of Jagermeister, a German alcoholic drink comprising herbs and spices, into a glass of beer. But in recent times, it is mixed with the popular Red Bull or any other energy drinks that "gives you wings".
Telegraph quotes John Creighton, Walkabout operations manager. After studying CCTV footage, Creighton described the incident as a "small altercation" in the VIP area. On Wednesday, Australia's stand-in skipper also said the brawl was a "minor incident". (Warner row can unite Australia: Shane Warne)
"David Warner and Joe Root were in our VIP area between 1.30 and 2.30 on Sunday morning along with several England and Australia team members," said Creighton, adding: "There was a small altercation between Warner and Root, you can see on the footage Root move back, but this was dealt with very amicably and quickly by the rest of the group, and both were calmly chatting to each other again immediately afterwards. They all left a short while later, and the small bar tab was picked up by David Warner."
The Guardian reports that Warner had claimed to have taken offence when he saw Root wearing a fake green-and-gold beard, thinking he was mocking Hashim Amla, the South Africa batsman. England sources said the Yorkshire teenager was merely joking about his own inability to grow a beard. Drinkers at the bar said that both sets of players had been "goading each other all night" in a lighthearted way.
"The two teams had been goading each other all night - but it just seemed like light-hearted banter really. I never expected it to boil over like it did, there was a brief scuffle and the England players left after that. You'd expect two professional teams to behave in a bit more of a responsible manner really," a bar regular was quoted as saying.
Warner has been suspended until the first Ashes Test match and also fined Australian Dollars 11,500. He will now miss the remainder of his country's Champions Trophy campaign. The left-hander will also be absent for tour matches against Somerset and Worcestershire, but can play in the first Ashes Test starting July 10.
