After his 200 in the first Test against West Indies at Antigua in July, Virat Kohli's Test batting graph has taken a nosedive of sorts. But the young Test captain, whose batting credentials are so rich, feels there is nothing to worry about his poor run.
For Virat Kohli, form is temporary and preparation is all that matters. The 27-year-old was speaking to reporters ahead of the second Test against New Zealand at Kolkata's Eden Gardens from Friday. India lead the three-match series 1-0.
"I don't think there's anything called form. It's about how you feel on that particular day. It's about how good you're mentally. It's about to be stable in our heads, when you get runs and when you don't," Kohli said.
Kohli has scored all of 78 runs in his last five Test innings. Apart from the double hundred at the Vivian Richards Stadium and 88 against South Africa in the Kotla Test in December 2015, Virat Kohli has not scored a 50 in his 15 Test innings. He scored 9 and 18 in the Kanpur Test that India won by 197 runs.
"You've to accept that you can't score runs every time. Working hard is in our hands and we look to do that at the practice sessions," Kohli said, highlighting the focus on batting drills at the nets.
Interestingly, when Indian fans picked their dream Test squad on the occasion of India's 500th Test last week, Virat Kohli did not find a place. Eden Gardens, which has prepared a new pitch, could see the start of good times for Kohli.
"Result cannot be in your hand all the time in cricket. You have only one chance in batting. It's a different thing if you get caught off a no-ball!
"Generally, cricket is a game of chances. But preparation is something that's in my hand and I look to do it 100 per cent at the practice," a philosophical Kohli said.
