Islamabad:
"Yes I have resigned as director NCA and I'll not take it (decision) back if I am asked for it," Sohail was quoted in the Daily Dawn.
The newspaper claimed that Sohail, who played 47 Test matches and 156 limited-overs internationals before retiring in 2000, resigned after failing to get approval from the Pakistan Cricket Board for his comprehensive development program.
Sohail was among a host of former Test cricketers who joined the PCB after Ijaz Butt took over as chairman of the cricket board in October last year.
"I tried my best to introduce a productive coaching program in the NCA and I wish for good progress at the academy," said Sohail, who planned to continue his career as a TV commentator.
Sohail, who was also part of Pakistan's 1992 winning World Cup squad, is the second former Test cricketer who has quit PCB in two months.
Abdul Qadir quit as chief selector during the Twenty20 World Cup last month, blaming meddling by PCB officials in the team selection.
Javed Miandad also quit as director general of the PCB in January, citing a limited role in the cricket board, before he rejoining the board in March.
