The holy trinity of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman will form a committee to pick Team India's next head coach. Former BCCI secretary and cricketer Sanjay Jagdale will be the chief coordinator of this panel.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday said it has shortlisted 21 candidates out of 57 applicants for the head coach's job. These 21 have met the BCCI's eligibility criteria.
Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman will have to submit their report to the BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke by June 22. The committee has the option to interview all the 57 applicants, if they want.
The Board is expected to make an announcement after its working committee meeting in Dharamsala on June 24. The new coach will take charge from the series against the West Indies in July-August. Meanwhile, Sanjay Bangar is the stand-in coach for the current ODI series in Zimbabwe.
There are several high-profile candidates for the top job. Former Team India director Ravi Shastri is looking for another stint but is likely to face a challenge from former cricketers Sandeep Patil and Anil Kumble.
The BCCI has not revealed the names of the candidates but there are overseas applicants as well. Australia coach Stuart Law, with considerable experience in the sub-continent, is reportedly in the fray.
It will not be an easy choice for Tendulkar and Co. India have two captains - Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni -- with unique mindsets. Dhoni has suggested that india must pick a man who "understands Indian culture."
