Five Asian players in Sangakkara's top XI
Sachin Tendulkar has lost out to Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting in Kumar Sangakkara's all-time best XI. The Sri Lankan legend, respected worldwide for his immaculate analysis of the game, has chosen Rahul Dravid ahead of Tendulkar.
According to a video released by the Lord's Cricket Ground, Sangakkara has chosen his all-time favourite XI and three Sri Lankans figure in that elite list. Interestingly, Sangakkara, who retired last year after having scored 12400 Test and 14,234 ODI runs, has chosen Adam Gilchrist as the keeper in his team.
As the video reveals, most choices are virtually automatic with Sangakkara, who continues to play competitive cricket for Sussex, having a little 'confusion' over the No. 5 slot and the second pacer in his top XI.
Like a lion-hearted Sri Lankan, 38-year-old Sangakkara picks Aravinda de Silva ahead of good friend Mahela Jayawardene for the No. 5 position.
"I and Mahela both feel Aravinda has been the best in this position," Sangakkara explains. De Silva is also the captain of the team.
While Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan and Wasim Akram walked into his all-time XI, Sangakkara was a bit circumspect on the choice of his second specialist seamer in his team. He finally went with former teammate Chaminda Vaas, who pipped Australian great Glenn McGrath.
Kumar Sangakkara's All-Time XI (in batting order): Matthew Hayden, Rahul Dravid, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Aravinda de Silva (captain), Jacques Kallis, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Muralitharan, Wasim Akram and Chaminda Vaas.
