Mumbai Indians have not required the services of any of their explosive batsmen like Andrew Symonds and Kieron Pollard in the three Indian Premier League (IPL) matches of the fourth season they have played so far, thanks to some spectacular power-hitting by skipper Sachin Tendulkar and Ambati Rayudu at the top.
Rayudu has been sensational from the start and has scored 130 runs, which includes two half-centuries in his three innings so far. He clearly has the hunger to succeed.
"I'm glad that I have done so well and I just want to carry forward the momentum. The tournament has only begun. There is still a long way to go," Rayudu told MiD DAY on the eve of the clash against Pune Warriors at the Wankhede Stadium.
Rayudu may well have chosen to be in the shadow of Tendulkar, who is the tournament's highest run-scorer (201) so far. Instead, he has matched the Little Master shot for shot.
"It is always a great feeling to bat alongside the cricketing legend. In last two years, I have learnt a lot from him and got ample batting tips, especially on how to build your innings in a T20 match. Sachin always advises us to play our natural game and that relieves us from any pressure when you come in to bat," said the 23-year-old.
Robin Singh, head coach of Mumbai Indians, said Tendulkar's passion for the game is slowly rubbing on to the youngsters in the squad.
"Probably, it has been transferred to the younger cricketers who have realised they also have a role to play. I think it has rubbed off on a few guys already," said Robin, when asked about Tendulkar's brilliant run in the tournament so far.
The batting maestro has remained unbeaten in all three matches.
