India's World Cup-winning captain says too much money in cricket can mislead youngsters and superheroes like Tendulkar, Kumble and Dravid are needed to educate players on what's right and what's wrong.

Punish players who spoil cricket's image, says Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev wants cricket administrators to be ruthless in dealing with cricketers who take the easy way out to get rich. In an interview to a leading daily, the former India skipper said too much money in the game was proving to be a deterrent and cricketers were prone to "making mistakes".

Kapil indicated India discard Sreesanth, who is facing charges of spot-fixing during Indian Premier League 2013 games, was silly to bite the bait laid by bookies. The Kerala pacer could face a ban from the Indian cricket Board.

"I think you have to be ruthless so that the boys cannot do such a thing. If Sreesanth has done something as stupid as that, the repercussions for it are well known around the world," Kapil said. "Look at what happened to those cricketers from Pakistan... If you can't learn from other people's mistakes, you should be punished." (Bacher says cricketers still interact with bookies)

In recent times, Indian cricket has been scarred by the spot-fixing issue. Delhi and Kolkata Knight Riders bowler Pradeep Sangwan failing a dope test only added insult to injury. Kapil feels the game needed India's superheroes to 'educate' the erring players.

"Competition is increasing. Pressure is increasing. And people make mistakes...This game has given us superheroes. You could give the examples of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Anil Kumble. If a young boy has to understand cricket, he should look at a better sportsman," said Kapil.

Replying to a question on whether the BCCI should come under RTI, Kapil said although cricket has done much better than other sports in India, the Board could be "more transparent." Kapil said the Board was "like a Parliament" and (electing) "good people will get you good results."
