Karachi:
Waqar, who was the bowling and fielding coach of the Pakistan team on their recent Australia tour, told PTI from Sydney that the offer was made to him verbally by PCB chairman Ejaz Butt during recent meetings in Lahore and Dubai.
"Yes PCB has offered me a full-time head coach's position with the team but I am still waiting for a written offer and relevant contract," he said.
However, PCB chief operating officer Wasim Bari said at the moment Waqar was one of the top contenders who are being considered for the job.
Waqar said he was keen to work with the national team in a full-time capacity.
"Whatever the reasons for the team's poor performances in Australia, I have spoken my mind to the board chairman and also given my report.
"But I am definitely interested in this coaching offer. Until now it is all verbal I am waiting for a written offer," he said.
Waqar, who formed a lethal new ball opening pair with Wasim Akram in the 80s and 90s, said Pakistan cricket has the talent and ability to come out of its current slump.
Waqar, who is settled in Sydney with his family, has worked twice before as bowling coach with the national team.
The PCB has said that it is in talks with some international coaches, including former South Africa coach Mickey Arthur, for the position after Intikhab Alam was released from his contract following the disastrous tour of Australia.
Bari said that a final announcement on the new coach could come in a week's time.
Meanwhile, sources within the board said that the new coach could be given a one-year contract till the 2011 World Cup in the sub-continent.
