Lahore:

Former opener Mohsin Khan has been appointed as the new chief selector of the national team by the Pakistan cricket Board.

The 54-year-old Khan takes over from Iqbal Qasim who had resigned last month following Pakistan's disappointing show in Australia where they were whitewashed in the Test and one-day series.

"I see this job as perhaps the biggest challenge and responsibility of my cricket career," Mohsin said today.

The graceful opener, who played 48 Tests and 75 one-day internationals between 1978 and 1986, said he had agreed to become chief selector only after the PCB chairman Ejaz Butt told him there would be no compromise.

"I spoke to Ejaz Butt who offered me this position and assured me the board will back the selectors on disciplinary issues concerning players," Mohsin said.

Mohsin said that he considers indiscipline as totally unacceptable in cricket.

"We will not tolerate any indiscipline from anyone and when I meet with the Chairman on Thursday I will be further discussing this with him," he added.

Mohsin will head a selection committee that also includes former Test players, Azhar Khan, Saleem Jaffer and Muhammad Illyas with two co-opted members, Asif Baloch and Farrukh Zaman from the Baluchistan and North West Frontier provinces.

Last year also former Test leg-spinner Abdul Qadir had resigned as chief selector during the Twenty20 World Cup after differences with the board.

Mohsin said that his immediate task would be finalise a strong squad to defend the Twenty20 World Cup title in the West Indies.

"I also have some suggestions in mind regarding who should be captaining the T20 team and I will conveying my opinion to the board Chairman on Thursday. I think they are two or three players capable of doing this job well," he said.

The board on today also announced that former Test captain Waqar Younis would be the new head coach of the national team and will be assisted by former Test batsman, Ijaz Ahmed.
