Pak minister promises visas to Indian fans

Islamabad:

A Pakistani minister today promised visas to Indian cricket team fans, provided they have match tickets for next month's cricket series between the two cricket-crazy nations. "We expect around 8,000 to 10,000 Indian fans altogether and (Pakistan) High Commission (embassy) in Delhi has been instructed to issue visas," Faisal Saleh Hayyat, the interior minister told reporters in Islamabad. The Indian cricket team would play five one-day internationals and three test matches during its March 10 to April 18 series against Pakistan. The Indian cricket team would play one-day internationals in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar while test matches are scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi, Lahore and Multan. Hayyat is scheduled to meet Pakistan Cricket Board chief Shaharyar Khan Wednesday after which it would be decided how many visas would be issued to the Indians for each center. "It is up to the Pakistan Cricket Board to calculate how many Indian fans would be in the country for each of the venues separately so that visas are issued to them," he said. India has refused to play test matches in Karachi and Peshawar due to security fears, but Hayyat said that the visitors would be provided top level security. Hayyat said that a senior police official has been appointed who will look after overall security for the Indian crickets throughout the country. (AP)
