Former SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Tom Moody was all praise for Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill after he scored a century in the IPL 2024 clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday. Gill stormed back to form with a match-winning century against CSK at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill, who scored 104 off just 55 balls, put on a record opening stand with Sai Sudharsan, who smashed 103 off just 51 balls. While analysing the match, Moody insisted that Gill's knock comes as a huge relief for him after the batter was did not find a place in the T20 World Cup squad.
Moody added that Gill's knock re-affirmed his status as a "world class batter".Â
"First and foremost, as the captain of the side, he'll be over the moon with the win, that would be the foremost thing on his mind. Secondly, he'll be thrilled about scoring a century for a couple of reasons. One, it signifies his significant contribution to the team's success. Two, it reaffirms his status as a world-class player. He's obviously gutted about not being part of India's World Cup 15 that's traveling to the Caribbean and the US. It has really had a massive impact on his contribution as a run-scorer in this year's IPL," Moody said on Star Sports.
Moody also spoke on the GT's fielding effort against CSK, and how it was crucial in separating the two sides.
"The big difference today was the fielding efforts. Gujarat was very good in the field, they took all their catches, some really good catches. CSK were unlike CSK, just a little sloppy in their performance out there. At the end of the day when you have a high-scoring game like that, in a game where you need to be taking those half chances, you need to be making those excellent sorts of runouts. It's important for the bowlers when the conditions are difficult for them to survive."
The win kept GT's slim playoffs hopes alive. They are currently eighth in the points table with 10 points from 12 matches.
CSK, on the other hand, remain 4th despite the defeat.
