Imagine a reunion of some of cricket's biggest superstars. The men who enthralled fans across the world in the 1990s and shared intense rivalries on the field come together once again in a new T20 league. Stuff of dreams? That will soon be a reality when the likes of Wasim Akram, Brian Lara, Adam Gilchrist join forces at the Masters Champions League (MCL) in Dubai from February 16.
The MCL will feature a franchise format. However, unlike the IPL or Big Bash, teams will not be based on geographic location, and instead will simply include the best possible players a franchise owner can put together from the qualifying player base. The tournament will be made up of six teams in its first year, with a total of 90 players taking part - 15 members per squad. The players must all have been former international cricketers who are now retired from all forms of the professional sport.
Cricket seems to have taken a cue out of other sports around the globe where yesteryear heroes have returned to give their fans a dose of their past greatness. Even as the MCL was announced in Dubai, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne met with International Cricket Council CEO Dave Richardson to share with him details of their T20 league.
While the MCL will be played across three venues -- Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Stadium -- the league Tendulkar and Warne have in mind will be hosted in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. The former batsman and the ex-leg spinner have reportedly approached Aussies Brett Lee, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Glenn McGrath, Englishmen Michael Vaughan and Andrew Flintoff as well as South African Jacques Kallis with offers of $25,000 a match.
