NZ vs SA, 1st Test, Day 2, Live Updates
We are back with the second innings to begin. The two Umpires are already out to the middle and the New Zealand players are seen in a huddle before spreading out to the field. It will be Neil Brand and Edward Moore to open the innings for South Africa. The Kiwi skipper Tim Southee is with the new ball and is all in readiness to begin the proceedings. Let's play...
...SECOND INNINGS...
New Zealand are all out on 511 after batting for 144 overs and 5 sessions. Kane Williamson's impressive 118 and Rachin Ravindra's exceptional 240 propelled New Zealand into a commanding position. Neil Brand, making his debut as the skipper, concluded the innings brilliantly with a remarkable 6-wicket haul for the Proteas. But the Kiwis will be delighted as they added some quickfire runs from Glenn Phillips, and Daryl Mitchell before getting all out. Matt Henry added 27 crucial runs to their tally at the backend and helped them breach the 500-run mark. South Africa will have to work really hard when they come out to bat and build partnerships as they have a huge total mounted ahead of them. Stay tuned as we bring the second innings just in a bit.
OUT! BOWLED'EM! Neil Brand finishes with a six-wicket haul and he has ripped through the Kiwi lower order in a jiffy. This is tossed up very full and on the off stump line, Tim Southee shows all the stumps and hangs back, looking to swing across the line but misses. The ball crashes into the stumps and Southee walks back for a duck. New Zealand end their first innings on 511 runs.
Fired in full and on the stumps, Tim Southee digs it out.
Tim Southee is the last man in at 11.
OUT! CAUGHT! Would you believe it? Neil Brand has picked up a five-wicket haul on debut and as South Africa's skipper as well, staggering. This is floated up around off stump, inviting the big shot and Matt Henry takes the bait. Hnery goes hard at it but ends up slicing it high toward the long off fence. Ruan de Swardt settles under it well and takes a lovely catch inches from the ropes. End of a quickfire cameo from Henry.
SIX! Matt Henry is relentless at the moment. Full and at the legs, Henry just whips it away and gets it into the grass banks over deep mid-wicket for another biggie.
Quicker one, bowled fuller and well outside the off stump.
SIX! Matt Henry is in the zone! Tossed up full and on middle and leg, Henry brings out the slog-sweep and gets it over cow corner for a maximum. The 500 also comes up for New Zealand.
Keeps bowling it short and wide, this is slapped away to deep cover for a run.
Attempted bumper, over middle and pulled away in front of square for a couple of runs more.
FOUR! Wow, that has come right off the screws! Banged in short and around off, Matt Henry keeps an open stance and swats it away through extra cover for a boundary.
Amazing shot and brilliant fielding as well. This is bowled full on the leg peg, Matt Henry makes room and drives it dead straight. Dane Paterson from long on hustles to his left and somehow pulls it back in. Two taken.
Misses out this time! Another short and wide one, Kyle Jamieson reaches out but hits it straight to the fielder at cover and gets across quickly for the single.
FOUR! Hammered away! Short and wide outside off, Kyle Jamieson stands tall and whacks it away past cover and the ball rockets to the fence.
Tshepo Moreki to bowl from the other end.
SIX! All the way! Tossed up around off, Matt Henry dances down the track right away and thumps it flat and straight back down the ground for a maximum.
Matt Henry is the next batter in.
OUT! TIMBER! A ripper of a delivery from Neil Brand and the Proteas skipper is having a stellar outing with the ball in hand. Tosses this one up on a nagging length and outside off, the ball lands on a foothole and turns back in very sharply. Mitchell Santner looks to lean on and block but is beaten on the inside edge and the ball hits the top of off stump.
