NZ vs AUS 2nd Test Day 1 Highlights
We are back with New Zealand's batting to begin! The Umpires walk out to the middle and the fielders of Australia are taking their respective positions. Tom Latham and Will Young are the two openers for New Zealand. It will be Mitchell Starc to begin the proceedings with the ball for Australia. Let's play...
...Third Innings...
Australia started with short innings from Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja. Marnus Labuschagne then took to the crease and delivered an impressive, resilient inning of 90 runs, narrowly missing his 12th Test century by just ten runs. Before being dismissed, he formed crucial partnerships first with Cameron Green and later with Travis Head, as well as Mitchell Starc. Mitchell Starc's important contribution of 28 runs and a brisk 23 from Cummins pushed Australia to a lead of 94 runs. Matt Henry emerged as the standout bowler, claiming more than half of the Australian wickets and securing a 7-wicket haul.
Matt Henry, the man of the moment is down for a quick chat. He says it feels to get the Aussies out quickly here. Adds that it was a lot of hard work and hopes their batters can do a good job. Mentions that the wicket slowed down a bit but there is still enough to get help with the new ball. Says that the partnerships are important and Marnus showed that if you get in you can score runs here. Ends by saying that it is all about sticking to the plans.
What a superb bowling display from Matt Henry as he succeeds in wrapping up the Australian tail in a jiffy. Henry's exceptional bowling display played a pivotal role in limiting the opposition's lead below three figures, as he ended with remarkable figures of 7-67 in 23 overs. After the Lunch break, Mitchell Starc briefly showcased his batting skills with a couple of boundaries before succumbing at 28 runs. Pat Cummins then took charge, unleashing a barrage of shots including three boundaries and a six against Ben Sears, throwing the kitchen sink to bolster the team's lead before Matt Henry wrapped up the Australian innings by dismissing Pat Cummins.
OUT! LBW! Matt Henry gets his seventh and wraps things up with a toe-crusher! He follows up the bouncer with an excellent yorker, on middle, angling in, Pat Cummins goes too far across and misses his flick shot to get hit on the pads. A huge appeal for LBW, but turned down. It looks really close and Tim Southee takes the review. The replay confirms no bat involved and Ball Tracking shows three reds. To be fair Cummins is already near the boundary ropes and the umpire changes his decision now. Australia have been bowled out for 256 and leads by 94 runs!
Matt Henry bangs in a well-directed bouncer, on middle, Pat Cummins ducks under it well.
BEATEN! Matt Henry lands this on a good length and on the fifth stump line, shaping in a bit, Pat Cummins tries to push it away but gets beaten on the outside edge.
Fuller again and on off, Pat Cummins taps it towards short covers.
Fuller and on middle, Josh Hazlewood works it off the inner half of the bat through square leg for a single.
A bouncer to start the over, on middle and leg, Josh Hazlewood ducks under it.
SIX! BANG! Make that 18 runs off the over! This sounded very sweet! Ben Sears bangs in another bouncer in the middle, Pat Cummins picks up the length early and hammers it off the middle of the bat way over the deep square leg fence for a biggie. Australia leads by 93 runs now!
FOUR! THREE IN A ROW! A bit streaky this one! Ben Sears pitches it up and outside off, Pat Cummins throws his bat at it hard and gets an outside edge that goes well over the slip cordon for the third boundary of the over. 12 runs already off the over!
FOUR! Another one! Ben Sears bangs this short and on middle, Pat Cummins backs away and goes for the pull but gets a bit of a top edge, the ball flies in the air towards the deep square leg region, Rachin Ravindra thinks he is in with a chance and runs to his left but the ball lands well wide of him and goes over the fence for a boundary.
FOUR! Pat Cummins is gonna go after it now! Ben Sears serves this fuller and around the middle, Pat Cummins clears his front leg away and thumps it over the bowler's head for a boundary.
Back of a length and on middle, angling in, Pat Cummins hops up and pats it down towards square leg.
Short of a length and outside off, Pat Cummins slashes hard at it but misses.
Pitched up and on middle and leg, angling in sharply, Josh Hazlewood tries to play at it but misses and gets hit on the pads.
Josh Hazlewood is the last man in for Australia.
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The local boy gets his sixth now! Matt Henry lands this on a hard length and around off, nips away a bit. Mitchell Starc stays back and tries to go for the big swipe across the line, but only manages to get a thin outside edge behind where Tom Blundell makes no mistake. Starc goes back after a decent little knock and Australia are nine down now.
