New Zealand captain Ross Taylor elected to bat after winning the toss against Sri Lanka in a triangular one-day series match on Friday.
New Zealand made three changes from the side that beat India by 200 runs in the opening match on Tuesday, bringing in Bradley-John Watling, Nathan McCullum and Tim Southee in place of Peter Ingram, Jacob Oram and Grant Elliott.
Each side will play the other twice in the preliminary league before the top two qualify for the final on August 28.
New Zealand: Ross Taylor (capt), Martin Guptill, Bradley-John Watling, Kane Williamson, Scott Styris, Gareth Hopkins, Nathan McCullum, Andy McKay, Kyle Mills, Daryl Tuffey, Tim Southee.
Sri Lanka: Kumar Sangakkara (capt), Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Kapugedara, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekera, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga.
Umpires: Kumar Dharmasena (SRI) and Simon Taufel (AUS)
TV umpire: Tyron Wijewardene (SRI)
Match referee: Alan Hurst (AUS)
