New Delhi:

The inaugural Karnataka Premier League Twenty20 bash kickstarts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. The event is being organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which hopes to cash in on the current popularity of Twenty20 cricket.

Eight teams representing different regions of Karnataka will compete for the trophy. In a disappointment to the organisers, the BCCI ruled that players from outside the state cannot take part, but the KSCA says it will still remain a platform for aspiring regional stars.

Teams will play against each other in the league round where they will fight for a berth in the two semi-finals (September 22) and final (September 23).

At the player auction, the most expensive player was Robin Uthappa, acquired by the Bangalore Brigadiers for Rs 3,25000 - the cap for each team was 7 lakh.

The first match will be played on Wednesday afternoon between Bangalore Rural and Mangalore United. The inaugural ceremony will follow in the evening.
