Johannesburg:

The International Cricket Council on Wednesday said that India batsman Virat Kohli can replace Yuvraj Singh, who was ruled out of the Champions Trophy after suffering a finger injury during the training session.

"The ICC has confirmed the event technical committee of the ICC Champions Trophy has approved Kohli as a replacement player for Yuvraj in India's squad for the tournament," an ICC release said.

"The confirmation was conveyed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India on behalf of the event technical committee," it added.

Stylish middle-order batsman Yuvraj fractured his right hand finger during their training session at Witwatersrand University this morning and has been advised six weeks rest.

The left-hander will return home and 20-year-old Kohli, will join the squad for the eight-nation tournament.

Kohli has played in six ODIs with his last being in the final of the tri-series against Sri Lanka earlier this month. So far, he has scored 161 runs at an average of 32.32 runs. India opens its campaign against Pakistan on Saturday at Centurion.
