Coming into the second Test, Shubman Gill needed only seven runs to complete his 3000 runs after falling short of it in the series opener in Galle. The skipper reached the milestone when he hit a boundary off an outside edge in the 23rd over of the first session off Keshara Nuwantha. At 26y and 349d, Gill has become the fourth youngest Indian ever to reach the milestone. The list is led by legendary former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar (23y 228d), while Virender Sehwag (26y 157d) and Dilip Vengsarkar (26y 263d) follow him on second and third, respectively.

This marks the end of the first session on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka. At Lunch, India's score read 88/2 in 25 overs with Devdutt Padikkal (13*) and Shubman Gill (11*) standing unbeaten. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara took one wicket each. 

As India have lost both their openers, the onus is now on the shoulders of skipper Shubman Gill. After the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill has joined hands with Devdutt Padikkal as two-down India aim for a stable partnership. In the previous over, Asitha Fernando leaks just a single.

As Jaiswal was leaving, Fernando gives him a send-off, which results into a heated altercation between the two players. Jaiswal even makes a physical contact as ugly scenes break out on the field. The umpires intervene and send Jaiswal back to the dugout. India go two down against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka finally get their first breakthrough as Lahiru Kumara dismisses KL Rahul for 18.  A very smart move by Lahiru as he bowls short and wide outside off, a delivery Rahul had been happy to leave alone until now. This time, however, he throws his bat at it and can only manage a thin outside edge. As a result, wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella takes an easy catch behind the stumps.

Stepping forward confidently, he times it beautifully through the covers.

"We expect a run fest. You know, that is the trait of this pitch. It provides a lot of runs for team batting first, and so also maybe team batting second. Now, when I look at the surface for this Test match this morning, you can see it's the same approach from the curator, same curator in Galle, and he's got the same approach here as well. He's covered the entire surface with grass. The only difference is there is a little bit of greenery on this grass. It's not a green top, but a little more sort of live grass as opposed to in the last Test where it was completely dried grass. So I again see the same approach where they're trying to keep the soil together with a lot of grass on top, grass to hold it," said Sanjay Manjrekar.

[On bowling first] "Yes, of course, as Shubman said, it's quite harder than Galle. I thought, yeah, it's good for batting, and I don't mind it bowling because, cloud covers, maybe we can strike early and put them under pressure. Galle was also a very good wicket, but I think as the game went on, it got a little bit slower and the ball started to turn. [Playing XI] Kuldeep, unfortunately, had some infections, so he misses out, and Saransh makes his debut for India. [How he would rate the Galle win] I would say probably a nine, because there's always room for improvement, and I think we played a pretty good match, a decent match. And obviously there were some areas where we could have got a little bit better, but, you know, this is Test cricket. It's very, very difficult to be able to have a near-perfect game because you're playing for five days, and to play that dominant and consistent cricket, especially in Test, is hard. But I think overall we had a pretty good match," said India skipper Shubman Gill. 

India skipper Shubman Gill wins the toss, opts to bat against Sri Lanka in the second Test of the two-match series on Sunday in Colombo. 

On the periphery, Shubman Gill appears in solid touch, having scored two hundreds in his last six innings. But scratch the cover, there is a tinge of weakness, a pattern-setting dismissals against spin, particularly the left-arm orthodox variation. True to that failure, Gill fell twice to Prabath Jayasuriya at Galle, and he will certainly like to set that unwanted record straight, a blemish on an otherwise impeccable run as team leader. As the skipper, Gill has managed to score 1100 runs in 10 Tests at an average of over 73, a remarkable leap from 1893 runs from 32 Tests at 35 before taking over the team's reins.

If India happen to complete a 2-0 clean sweep, they will have a chance to go up to the fourth spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) rankings with 57.58 percentage points. There is a high possibility that Bangladesh, who are currently fourth in WTC table with 66.67 percentage points post Darwin victory, will lose the second Test against Australia at McKay and drop down to fifth spot with 55.56 percentage points.

As Saranash Jain has been handed his maiden India cap, it is highly likely that spinner Kuldeep Yadav will be benched. However, there are chances that the management can opt for the fourth spinner and include Kuldeep in the Playing XI as well. For that, we need to wait till the toss. 

India's last Test rubber win abroad was against the West Indies in July 2023. Since then, India lost to Australia and shared the series with South Africa and England away from home. In this interim, the defeats at home against New Zealand and South Africa also dimmed the halo around this Indian Test outfit.

Substantial knocks from skipper Shubman Gill and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will fill the remaining blank columns as India push for their first overseas Test series victory in three years during the second and final match against Sri Lanka.

And it's finally official now as Saransh Jain gets his maiden India cap and is set to make his international debut. The 33-year-old spinner receives the his maiden cap from veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the toss.
