Stumps, Day 3! A day to remember for England, a day to forget for India. Joe Root broke one record, and then another, and then another, and then more. No. 2 in the all-time Test runs list, only behind Sachin. Went past Bradman for the most home Test tons against a single opponent, and past Steve Smith for the most Test tons against India. Stokes made a 50, retired hurt, came back and stayed not out till the end. The lead? A massive 186, and there's more to come.

The final session on Day 3 is underway. Jasprit Bumrah has taken the ball. Concerns over his fitness earlier on, as he went off the field. Still looks a little tentative in his movement. But India need their star pacer to fire. 5 runs off the first over after Tea.

India captain Shubman Gill has been left searching for answers on how to get the England batters out. With their lead now only 26, and 8 wickets still to get, England will be setting sights on a total of more than 600 today. Batting conditions are excellent, the sun is out, and perhaps only some Jasprit Bumrah magic can save India now.

That is Lunch on the third day of this game. England are in the driving seat, having scored 332 for 2, trailing India by only 26 runs. They scored 107 runs in this session without losing any wicket as both Joe Root and Ollie Pope reached their respective fifties.

Wow! That is a really good late cut from Joe Root for a four. Jadeja gave the batter just a little bit of room outside off-stump and Root took full advantage of it. He cut it late, beating the first slip for a four.

Joe Root slammed his half-century in 99 balls. With this feat, he surpasses Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis in the list of players with most 50-plus scores in Test cricket. Root has 104 fifty-plus scores in Test cricket now, while both Ponting and Kallis stand at 103 each. Sachin Tendulkar tops this list with the tally of 119.

England continue to keep India under pressure. They have now crossed the 300-run mark and trail India by just 57 runs. The hosts seem all set to take a big first-innings lead here. Ollie Pope and Joe Root are solid in the middle, having stitched a third wicket stand of 104 runs. 

Ollie Pope gets to a well-deserved fifty here. It is the 16th Test fifty for the number 3 batter of England. He pushed the Ravindra Jadeja delivery towards mid-off to take a single and race to his half-century. England are on top of this game. They trail India by just 71 runs.

Dhruv Jurel has dropped the catch of Ollie Pope, but to be honest, it was an extremely tough chance. The ball brushed the glove of Pope on the bowling of Anshul Kamboj and then it then hit the glove of Jurel before hitting his right thigh and falling on the ground.  

Another fielding blunder from India and England will get a boundary for free. Ollie Pope tapped the ball at mid-on and tried to take a quick single. Mohammed Siraj fired a throw at the striker's end and a loose attempt from Dhuv Jurel to stop the ball saw it getting deflected off his glove and run away for a four.  

A fuller ball from Mohammed Siraj outside off-stump and Ollie Pope has driven that really well for a four. He meticulously found the gap between cover and mid-off for the boundary. England trail India by just 84 runs.

Joe Root has surpassed Rahul Dravid (13288) and Jacques Kallis (13289) to become the player with third most runs in Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 15921 runs, while Ricky Ponting follows him with 13378 at the second spot. Root has 13290 Test runs to his credit as of now.

Joe Root gets a life here! It was bowled outside off-stump from Mohammed Siraj and Root guided it towards the gully. The fielder there got a hand to the ball before it was ricocheted to Ravindra Jadeja at backward point. Jadeja took a throw at the stumps at non-striker's end but that missed the target. The poor fact was there was nobody close to the stumps at the non-striker's end otherwise Root would have been out. Siraj, who was halfway down the pitch during his follow-up, and Jadeja both were left fuming over no backing near stumps for the throw.

Ollie Pope tried to play the Jasprit Bumrah delivery on the leg side. It was a good length ball that surprised with the bounce in it. Pope ended up getting a top edge on it but to his good luck the ball fell at the vacant silly point.

Joe Root walked across the stumps as the fuller ball from Mohammed Siraj hit him on the front pad. A huge shout for an LBW followed, while the ball raced away to the fine leg fence for a four. After a discussion, Shubman Gill eventually decided to go upstairs. While the impact by on the line of stumps, the ball was found to be missing the leg stump. India lose their second review.

What was a huge problem during India's bowling on Day 2, remains an issue on Day 3 as well, that is the sun shining bright over the ground. This makes the pitch a batting paradise with no help for bowlers at all.

Shardul Thakur to get us underway! He will bowl the first ball to Root, who needs 108 runs from here to become the second highest run-scorer in the history of the Test cricket, a feat currently held by Ricky Ponting, who is in the comm box and feels Root will go past him today.

The Indian players led by Shubman Gill have arrived in the middle. Pope and Root are both in readiness. We are moments away from the start. The conditions for batting are pristine and India would need an extraordinary effort to rattle the hosts.

Vaughan says India need Virat Kohli's mentality on Day 3 to keep series alive. He feels that if England bat through the day, the game and the series will be done and dusted. Apt observation from Vaughan. Conditions still look pristine for batting, so the Indian bowlers will have to come up with an inspired performance

Former England cricketer David Lloyd revealed that the common consensus of the 'legends lounge' at Old Trafford was that Rishabh Pant was 'milking his injury' when he walked out to bat on Day 2. Pant resumed his knock at 37 and went on to complete his half-century before Jofra Archer uprooted his stumps.

"I've never had a metatarsal, which I think is somewhere in the foot, seeing Rishabh Pant. I have had a smashed hand against Andy Roberts and a broken cheekbone. I couldn't bat on after either, although I think I did continue when I had a broken finger. Pant looked in pain; it was pretty heroic of him to come out, though.

"I was in that legends lounge today, and the consensus was, 'He is milking that injury. It can't be that bad. He's milked it, coming down those steps, and one or two said, 'He should be timed out,'" said former English cricketer David Lloyd for talkSPORT Cricket.

Rishabh Pant showed immense grit and courage to walk out on Day 2 and bat again. He went on to complete his fifty. However, there is no clarity whether he will bat in the second innings.
