Day 1 did not go as per plans for the Indian players, particularly skipper Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. The decision to bat first after winning the toss was expected. Looking for an opening to make India's Test XI for the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle from August 12, Pujara walked out to face the new ball. He was bowled for 11 by Aussie medium pacer Marcus Stoinis.
There was more disappointment to follow. Virat Kohli, India's Test captain, failed to utilize the opportunity to spend time in the middle after being LBW for 16 off 42 balls. Ashton Agar was the happiest man at Chepauk after getting his idol out.

Karun Nair's 50 proved that there was no devil in the pitch. Australia A skipper Usman Khawaja rotated his bowlers well and on a sluggish pitch the spin-pace combination worked well for the visitors. Pacer Gurinder Sandhu finished with 3/25 after Agar and Steve O'Keefe spun out the top order with two apiece. India A were all out for 135 after batting for almost 69 overs. Australia A resume at 43 for no loss, trailing India A by 92 runs. Pujara and Kohli would certainly like to bat for a second time. For that to happen, Ojha and Aaron have to play the lead role. The morning session will show the day.
