Not a stranger to controversies, former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs has been arrested on Sunday by Cape Town police for drunken driving. Gibbs was reportedly driving at a high speed when his car collided with another. According to Sports24, no injuries were reported but police initiated action against Gibbs.
"A case of drunk driving is under investigation. The 40-year-old suspect was arrested at 23:30 on Sunday and will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on November 25, 2015," FC Van Wyk, the spokesperson of Western Cape police told the media.
This is not the first case of drunken driving against Gibbs. In March 2008, he was arrested for reckless or negligent driving in Cape Town. The charges were later withdrawn. In 2009, Gibbs underwent rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse.
Gibbs, 40, who last played for South Africa in 2010, has featured in 90 Tests and 248 ODIs, scoring over 14,000 international runs. The first player to hit six sixes in one over in a ODI, Gibbs was an IPL regular, having played for the now disbanded Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians.
In 2001, Gibbs was fined along with several teammates for smoking marijuana during that year's tour of the West Indies. Most notoriously, Gibbs was involved in the match-fixing affair with former captain Hansie Cronje. He was banned for six months. Gibbs repeatedly refused to tour India fearing arrest and refused to even speak to Indian Police over the matter.
