He achieved this feat in just his 123rd innings, breaking the mark set by Virat Kohli, who had gotten past the mark in 136 innings.
Amla needed 15 runs before the start of the match, achieved the landmark when pulled Mohit Sharma for a boundary towards midwicket. The achievement of this landmark could potentially turn around his poor series.
In four matches prior to the Mumbai ODI, he had managed to score just 66 runs at an average of 16.5 with a high score of just 37.
Before Amla, Kohli had achieved the landmark during the ODI series against Sri Lanka in November. During the third ODI in Vizag, Kohli scored 53 off 61 balls as he shattered the record that was previously set by Sir Vivian Richards in his 141st innings.
During the Benson and Hedges World Series game against Pakistan in Brisbane on January 1989, Richards was run-out for only 18 but he managed to go past 6000 runs in the process.
