Bangalore:

The Indian women's team took a 2-0 lead in their five-match One-Day International series against England after a strong bowling performance took them to a 14-run victory in a low-scoring game at the County Ground in Taunton. India set England a target of 130, thanks to Amita Sharma's composed knock of 42, and in reply, England were all out for 115.

Put into bat, India experienced a freefall of wickets at the start. They were six down for just 34 at one point, and then 71 for nine, before a tenth-wicket partnership of 58 runs between Amita and Gouher Sultana helped them to 129. Apart from Amita's knock, only Harmanpreet Kaur (21) and Sultana (22), made contributions of note. Katherine Brunt, the right-arm medium pacer, did most of the damage, taking 4 for 20.

India's bowlers made up for their batters' shortcomings, although England's final-wicket partnership of 26 runs, between Danielle Wyatt (19) and Georgia Elwiss (10), made for a nervy finish. Led by Jhulan Goswami, the right-arm medium pacer, who took 4 for 17, the bowlers nipped every England partnership in the bud. The inability to string a partnership cost England, as India took wickets at regular intervals. Tammy Beaumont was England's highest scorer with 31.

After contributing with the bat, Sultana, the left-arm orthodox spinner, was also amongst the wickets, taking 2 for 30. Veda Krishnamurthy, the legspinner, pitched in with 2 for 14.

The third ODI will be played at the same venue on July 5.

Brief scores
India Women 129 all out in 47.5 overs (Amita Sharma 42, Gouher Sultana 22, Harmanpreet Kaur 21; Katherine Brunt 4-20) beat England Women 115 all out in 47. 2 overs (Tammy Beaumont 31, Jenny Gunn 20; Jhulan Goswami 4-17) by 14 runs
