Australia's score of 480 runs proved to be too much for West Indies as they lost the first Test by an innings and 65 runs on Day 3 in Brisbane, despite a brave century from Adrian Barath.

Chasing the total, West Indies found themselves in soup when they were bundled out for just 228 runs in the first innings despite some fight from Travis Dowlin (62) and Denesh Ramdin (54). Dashing skipper and opener Chris Gayle fell for just 31 runs.

Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Hauritz picked 3 wickets apiece to leave Windies reeling.

Australia enforced follow-on and West Indies fared worse in their second innings, Barath being the sole exception. Barath made 104 to become the youngest Caribbean centurion.

Australian bowlers were breathing fire. Ben Hilfenhaus, who claimed 2 victims in the first innings, took three wickets in the 2nd innings, while Shane Watson and Hauritz picked 2 wickets each. Windies collapsed in mere 52.1 overs posting 187 runs.

Hilfenhaus was adjudged Man of the Match.

The second Test between Australia and West Indies starts from December 4 in Adelaide.
