New Delhi:
Atapattu announced his retirement Nov 20 from international cricket after Sri Lanka played the second Test against Australia. He will lead the Delhi Jets in the tournament.
Atapattu, one of Sri Lanka's star batsmen, announced his retirement in a letter to Duleep Mendis, the Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive, before lunch on the final day of the second Test in Hobart.
The second Test match against Australia was Atapattu's 90th and he finished his career with 5,502 runs at 39.02, including six double-centuries. He also has 16 hundreds overall and 17 half-centuries.
Atapattu made his debut in 1990-91 on a sorry note, with his first six Test innings yielding five ducks and a single.
But the selectors showed faith in him in the mid-1990s. He scored his maiden ODI and Test hundreds in succession, both against India.
Atapattu's success in the ODI's earned him a place in the Test side despite a 13-match slump after his 108 against India, but he shrugged it off with the first of six double-centuries, against Zimbabwe in early 1998.
