Afridi, 36, still wants to play T20 cricket for Pakistan
Shahid Afridi started trending within hours of Lionel Messi announcing his international retirement. Social media started mocking at the former Pakistan captain who continues to remain in contention for a national berth in T20 cricket.
An emotional Messi decided to end his career in the Argentina shirt soon after Chile won the Copa America 4-2 on penalties. Messi missed Argentina's first spotkick and was in tears after Argentina lost a tight match.
Afridi has hardly shown any remorse after Pakistan's repeated debacles in world tournaments. The mercurial 36-year-old Pathan once again toyed with the idea of retirement after Pakistan's early exit in the ICC World T20 in March-April this year.
Pakistan flopped badly at the ICC World T20, winning just one match against Bangladesh and going down to Australia, New Zealand and arch-rivals India.
Under pressure from the team management, Afridi resigned as Pakistan's T20 captain but wanted to continue playing for the country. He had quit Test and 50-over cricket earlier.
"I would also like to inform that InshaAllah I intend to continue to play the game for my country and league cricket, and request my fans to kindly keep praying and supporting me for my best future performances for Pakistan (as a player); and in all other arenas of the game, world over," Afridi had said.
Messi's action has swung Twitterati into action. Fans are asking the obvious question - when will Afridi finally take a bow?
