It was a heart break for Vijender Singh fans as the one of India's biggest medal hopes will come back empty handed after losing in the quarter-finals of the men's 75kg event at the London Olympics. Vijender Singh lost his bout 13-17 to Uzbek Abbos Atoev.
Vijender had beaten Atoyev in the final of the 2010 Asian Games. But inspite of starting out with a psychological advantage, the first round was evenly match, ending at 3-3.
Many believe that Vijender was unlucky in the 2nd round with Abbos not being given many holding fouls. Vijender did rattle Abbos with a lethal left hook but the Uzbek came up with a few solid counter punches to win the 2nd round 7-5.
In the final round, Vijender seemed to run out of steam. Abbos scoring another seven points to beat Vijender 17-13 in the quarterfinal, dashing all hopes of Vijender's bid to become the only Indian athlete to win 2 Olympic medals.
