Basle:
Top Indian woman shuttler Aparna Popat advanced to the quarterfinal of the Swiss Open badminton tournament in Basle. However, the country's shuttlers in the men's section disappointed with national champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta and Nikhil Kanetkar crashing out in the second round. Aparna progressed to the last eight with a hard-fought 12-13, 11-9, 11-9 win over Germany's Petra Overizer. Earlier, Aparna got a walk-over in the first round when Karina Dewitt, the sixth seed from Holland, conceded after leading 9-6 in the first game, having injured her calf muscle. In the quarterfinal, Aparna will clash with Hong Kong's Wang Chen. In the men's section, Abhinn Shyam Gupta, ranked 56 in the world, lost tamely 0-15, 6-15 to Ronaldo Susilo, an Indonesian settled in Singapore. Kanetkar, world number 47, won the first game 15-8 and was leading 8-7 in the second at one stage against China's Chen Yu, a semi-finalist at the All England Championship, before losing steam as his opponent got his act together and won the last two games 15-7, 15-9.
