Deepika Kumari is certainly one of the gold prospects for India at the London Olympics. Ranked 1 in the world, Deepika has had a great run ever since she made her debut.
Born in Ranchi to Shivnarayan Mahato, an auto-rickshaw driver and Geeta Mahato, a nurse in Ranchi Medical College, Deepika started her training at the Arjun Archery Academy in 2006. Later she joined Tata Archery Academy where she started her professional training. Same year she won junior compound individual gold at the World championship in Merida, Mexico.
In 2009, she won the Youth World archery Championship in Ogden. In the same event, she won a gold medal in the women's team recurve event along with Dola Banerjee and Bombayala Devi. Next year in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, Deepika won two gold medals - one each in the individual event and team recurve event. In the 2010 Guangzhou Asiad, she was a part of the bronze-winning team.
Earlier this year in May, she won her first individual gold at the World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
