Gayle has sore throat, manager says will play against Ireland

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle is suffering from sore throat and cold but team manager said he will be fit to play against Ireland at Mohali on Friday in their Group B encounter of the cricket World Cup.

"He had a sore throat and we advised him some medicine for that," a doctor who attended on Gayle said.

Team media manager Phillip Spooner told PTI that it was nothing serious or to be worried about.

"He had it from Dhaka. It (infection) is mild," he said, adding that Gayle will be fit to play in the next game. Meanwhile, Ireland, who lost to India in Bangalore on Sunday, reached here this evening.

Coach Phil Simmons and the players went straight to their hotel rooms after their long journey to here via Delhi. Ireland's media manager Barry Chambers said that some team members will have practice tomorrow morning.

He said that Trent Johnston, who was injured during yesterday's match, had undergone a scan, which showed some bruises.

Hotel Taj here, where the two teams are staying, has been put under tight security, with police personnel deployed in strength, both inside and outside the hotel.
