Wearing their passion for the game on their sleeves, cricket fans on Sunday descended at Chinnaswamy stadium in full force despite the elaborate security arrangements in place to cheer Indian cricketers during their World Cup league match aguinst Ireland here.Cricket fans, armed with sun glasses, caps and water bottles to beat the scorching sun, arrived at the stadium, some of them much ahead of the scheduled start to witness their favourite sporting heroes.
Youngsters sporting head bands, placards bearing witty messages and children in tow with their parents, lent a carnival mood as the weekend crowd packed the stadium to the full. Vendors selling the national flag did brisk business as the fans stopped by them to pick up the tri-colour to wave during the match.
Fans wore their Indian pride and passion for the game on their faces, as they came in with their cheeks painted with colours of the national flag and several wearing blue apparels, making no bones about which side they favoured.
Meanwhile, the police beefed up security in and around the stadium to avoid the repeat of February 24 episode when fans waiting to buy tickets for the India-England match were lathicharged. Over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around the stadium and several CCTV cameras installed.
Police also imposed traffic restrictions in and around the stadium, including in the parking of vehicles in the vicinity of the venues.
