Somdev, seeded sixth, faced stiff resistance in the first set from the local boy but eventually secured a 7-6 (7) 6-2 win.
He will next face another American wild card Alex Kuznetsov, who beat compatriot Scoville Jenkins 6-4 1-6 7-6 (1) in his opening round.
