World No.3 Jelena Jankovic lasted for just 14 points as she pulled a right hamstring muscle, retiring after a game and a half in her Hopman Cup match on Wednesday against Tatiana Golovin.
The unfortunate circumstance gave the French a 1-0 lead over Serbia in the tie, which is in danger with Jankovic unable to play the doubles.
The Serb now faces a race for fitness with the Australian Open starting Jan 14.
Jankovic suffered the injury midway through the opening game of the match at the Burswood dome. She won the game, then took treatment on and off court.
She came back out and played two points before giving up.
