Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria beat Mariana Diaz-Olivia of Argentina 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 Monday in the first round of the Istanbul Cup.
Pironkova will face top-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia on Tuesday.
Also, sixth-seeded Catalina Castano of Colombia beat Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-3, 6-3, Karolina Sprem of Croatia upset eighth-seeded Jelena Kostanic of Croatia 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands defeated Irina Kotkina of Russia 6-0, 4-0. Kotkina retired with an injury. (AP)
