Melbourne: Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt faces a possible third round Australian Open clash with former No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten, while top-seeded Serena Williams begins her bid for a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title against Emelie Loit of France. Hewitt was drawn against a qualifier in the first round and either American Cecil Mamiit or another qualifier in the second round before a possible showdown with Brazilian Kuerten. Hewitt could meet either American Andy Roddick or Jiri Novak in the quarterfinals. On the opposite side of the draw, second-seeded Andre Agassi, who has three Australian championships among his seven Grand Slam titles, will open against American Brian Vahaly, who jumped 306 places in the rankings to finish inside the top 100 in 2002. Agassi's second-round opponent would be either Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea or Spaniard David Ferrer and he is seeded to meet Frenchman Nicolas Escude in the third round. The 32-year-old American could face Argentine Guillermo Canas or Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the fourth round. Kafelnikov won the 1999 Australian Open and lost in the final to Agassi in 2000. Agassi had a wrist injury last year and couldn't defend his Australian Open title. Pete Sampras won't be playing in Australia. On the women's side, Serena and Venus Williams, the sisters who've met in the last three Grand Slam finals, were on opposite sides of the draw at Melbourne Park for the first time and couldn't meet until the final. Serena will meet Loit in the first round while second-seeded Venus will take on Svetlana Kuznetsova. No. 4 Kim Clijsters of Belgium was in Serena's half of the draw, while two-time defending champion Jennifer Capriati, seeded third, was in the same half as Venus. (AP)
