Andy Murray retired with a right wrist injury Tuesday while leading Filippo Volandri of Italy 5-1 in the first round at the Hamburg Masters.

Andy Murray retired with a right wrist injury Tuesday while leading Filippo Volandri of Italy 5-1 in the first round at the Hamburg Masters.

The ninth-seeded Murray called for the trainer after dropping his racket in pain when hitting a forehand. He attempted to play following treatment, but retired after two more points.

"As soon as I hit it I knew something wasn't right," said Murray, who was celebrating his 20th birthday. "I was hitting the ball pretty big today so I don't know if it was something to do with that."

Volandri, who upset Roger Federer in Rome last week, lost the opening three games to love. He will next play Jose Acasuso of Argentina, who defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-4.

Nicolas Almagro upset sixth-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

After being outplayed in the first set tiebreaker, Almagro produced some spectacular shots in the second set to dominate his struggling opponent.

Also in the second round, seventh-seeded Ivan Ljubicic rallied to beat Florent Serra of France 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and will next play David Ferrer, who struggled before beating Robin Soderling of Sweden 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In the first round, Florian Mayer of Germany beat 13th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5), and 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya downed Mardy Fish 6-0, 6-3 to set up a meeting with 10th-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Also, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland downed German wild card Tobias Summerer 6-1, 7-6 (5); Julien Benneteau of France beat Rainer Schuettler of Germany 7-6 (2), 6-2; and Spanish qualifier Oscar Hernandez defeated Benjamin Becker of Germany 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3.
