Chennai: Seeded players continued to tumble out of the ATP Chennai Open with fifth ranked Kenneth Carlson and sixth seed Yen Hsun Lu of Taipei suffering shock defeats today. The exodus of seeds, however, failed to affect Asia No. 1 and second seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand who came up with a straight sets 6-3, 6-2 win over Nicolas Devilder of France. While Lu choked after showing promise, Carlson of Denmark was left ruing his mistakes as they lost their pre-quarterfinal matches to unseeded Kristof Vliegen of Belgium and Paul Henri Mathieu of France respectively. It was a well earned win for the Frenchman, ranked 111, who won 6-3, 7-5 against the Dane. Against Vliegen, Lu wilted under pressure and surrendered the initiative after winning the first set and leading 5-2 in the second going down 6-1, 5-7, 6-7 (8/6) in 134 minutes. For Mathieu it was also revenge of sorts as he conceded his first round match to Carlsen here last year following a wrist injury. He was out of the circuit for six months after that and returned only in July in Washington where he lost in the quarters to Andre Agassi. (PTI)
