Harinder Sandhu Beats Mahesh Mangaonkar to Win Squash Title

A stiffer fight was expected between the two Indian teammates which won a historic gold at the just-concluded Incheon Asian Games, but Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu was the better player on the day winning 11-5, 11-5 and 11-6 against an erratic top seed Mahesh Mangaonkar.

Displaying awesome prowess, third seed Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu got the better of top seed Mahesh Mangaonkar in straight games to bag the title in the Jaipur leg of the JSW Indian Squash Challenger Circuit here Monday.

Egypt's Nouran El Torky beat South African Cheyna Tucker 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, and 11-4) to claim the women's title at the Jaipur Club Courts.

A stiffer fight was expected between the two Indian teammates which won a historic gold at the just-concluded Incheon Asian Games, but Sandhu was the better player on the day winning 11-5, 11-5 and 11-6 against an erratic top seed Mahesh.

In the first game, Sandhu shot to a 5-1 lead and consolidated it 7-3 before pocketing it 11-5.

In the second game, Mahesh played some top-flight shots but could not stop Sandhu from taking a 4-0. But, Mahesh got the parity at 4-4 and took lead but could not hold on to it for long. Sandhu took the second game again 11-5.

The third game saw Mahesh throwing his racket on the floor in frustration only to receive a conduct warning. Mahesh was in the lead at 6-5. But Sandhu rallied superbly to take an 8-2 lead. At 10-6, Sandhu served for the match and won the game 11-6 to emerge champion of the first JSW Challenger tournament here.

In the women's final, Egypt's Nouran El Torky beat South African Cheyna Tucker 3-0. El Torky was dominant right from the word go and had little difficulty in winning in straight games 11-3, 11-8, 11-4 to win the title.
