India's Seema Punia failed to qualify for the women's discus throw final at the 2016 Olympics after she finished an overall 20th in qualfying at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
There were two groups of qualifying - A and B - with each pool having 17 participants. The Indian was part of Group B. The top 12 out of 34 competitors qualified for the final with Cuban Yaime Perez topping the list with a best throw of 65.38 metres.
Seema's best throw came in her first attempt when she threw the discus for a distance of 57.58m while she fouled her second attempt. Her third throw of 56.78 was not good enough and the 33-year-old had to exit the event in 20th position.
She finished ninth in Group B.
Seema hails from Sonepat in Haryana and had won the gold medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. She also has three Commonwealth Games medals, two of them being silver.
