India will play for pride against Canada in their fourth match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Ipoh, Malaysia on Thursday. For Team India's new coach Paul van Ass, the Azlan Shah has been a big disappointment.
With just one point from three matches, India are out of contention for a medal. The 3-2 defeat against Malaysia on Wednesday drove the nail in India's coffin as traditional weaknesses surfaced once again. Malaysia won by a 58th minute field goal that exposed India's defence that has time again failed under pressure in international tournaments.
A profligate India has paid dearly in this tournament. Several chances were wasted and India's fighting spirit went down the drains. The team has not learnt from its mistakes and that will not please Van Ass. India's failure to defend in the dying minutes resulted in a 2-1 defeat against New Zealand. India drew the first match against Korea 2-2. ('India Among Top-Five Fittest Teams in Current World Hockey')
"No, I am not happy with the performance. I am especially not happy with the way we started," Van Ass said after the Malaysian defeat.
"I was happy with the performance against Korea. That was a matured game. I was relatively happy with the performance against New Zealand. We gave away that game in the end. But today we gave it away again. That's the story which we have to solve," a visibly disappointed Van Ass said.
