The Pune lad who has finished second twice recently holds a two-stroke lead at the end of the first round at the Par-70 Rambagh Golf Club.
Saurabh Bahuguna was lying second with 69 while local lad Amanjyot Singh was third on a day when only three par or sub-par scores were recorded.
As many as four players - Karan Vasudev, L Selvadurai, Simarjeet Singh, Rahul Bajaj were tied for the fourth place at one-over par 71. Wasim Khan, Sanjeev Singh, Vikram Rana and Rudresh Sharma were tied for the eighth spot at two-over 72.
Tarun beginning from the 10th, made a sedate with a bogey on the 12th. However he revived his round with a hat-trick of birdies beginning from the 13th. On the 15th he hit a 3-wood off the tee and followed that with a sand-wedge approach shot and then nailed the birdie putt from seven feet. One more birdie on the 18th put the 25-year-old at three-under for his front nine.
On the back nine, he saved one more stroke on the tough par-3 second with a good tee shot, landing four feet from the pin. The only bad patch on his card came on the fourth and fifth when he suffered bogeys on each of them. He parred the rest till the 18th, which he birdied.
Meanwhile Saurabh Bahuguna played solid golf making pars on 17 holes with the solitary birdie coming on the par-5 eighth. "I missed a lot of short putts for birdie else I should have ended with a better score," said Saurabh.
Local lad Amanjyot Singh also began in a similar fashion making pars on the first eight holes before converting on the ninth. However in the back nine, he made two consecutive bogeys on the 11th and 12th before making a birdies on the 14th and 16th. A bogey was sandwiched in between.
