Bobby Wadkins completed a start-to-finish victory in the Boeing Championship on Sunday, beating 63-year-old Ray Floyd by one stroke.
Wadkins finished with a 1-under-70 for a 10-under 203 total. It was his second Champions Tour title and first in five years.
"I'm glad it's over,'' said Wadkins, who had gone 125 tournaments without a victory since winning the 2001 Long Island Classic just 10 days after his 50th birthday.
Floyd shot an 8-under-63, one stroke shy of the best round in his 43-year career on the US PGA Tour and 50-and-over circuit.
"It's the first time that I've ever shot my age and that's very special,'' Floyd said.
"And to do it in a golf tournament and in the final round. No one's more surprised than me.''
Floyd, who reached 10 under before his lone bogey of the day, finished more than an hour ahead of Wadkins and could only try and stay loose in case of a playoff on The Raven Golf Club course.
"I can't remember playing a round of golf where I really never missed a golf shot,'' Floyd said.
Less than four months shy of his 64th birthday, Floyd would have become the tour's oldest winner if he had won.
Floyd built a two-stroke lead at one point with five straight birdies on the back nine, but bogeyed the 16th while Wadkins birdied number 10 to leave them tied.
Wadkins pulled ahead to stay with his 7-foot birdie putt on No. 17.
"I knew exactly what had to be done,'' Wadkins said.
Wadkins, who earned $240, 000 began the round with a three-stroke lead. The 54-year-old shot a course-record 62 on Friday and had an even-par 71 on Saturday.
Loren Roberts, a three-time winner this year, closed with a 69 to tie for third with Scott Simpson (67), Craig Stadler (70) and Tom Watson (67) at 7 under.
Defending champion Jim Thorpe, who won last year at another Florida course, finished 11 shots back at 1-over 214.
John Harris, who began the day three shots behind Wadkins, slumped to a 7-over-78 on Sunday and finished 11 shots back.
Tim Simpson, a four-time winner on the U.S. PGA Tour who never won a tour event after being diagnosed with Lyme disease in 1991, finished at 8-over 221 in his Champions Tour debut. (AP)
