All India inter-school event showcases young talent

The fact that three Indians finished as first, second and third in a $300,000 golf tournament in Taiwan last week explains how much of talent is available in India. That was even more clear at this week's All India Inter-school Tournament in Delhi which had a record number of entries. Irina Brar needed to make a birdie on the final hole to tie Chandigarh's Vivek High School with Modern Vasant Vihar and take the match to a play off. But nerves got the better of the ladies national champion. A playoff did happen in the under-15 age group. Karan Vasudev making a good recovery from the rough but it wasna€™t good enough because Madhav Verma had a simple par putt on the first play off hole to win the trophy. "Competition is good for you, it has helped us. This year we have eight tournaments. Last year and the year before we had only five, so ita€™s becoming better for us, because we have more competition," said Madhav. One of the winners was Raghav Wahi from Jammu. "I feel good about winning because I came second in the last tournament, so I practiced hard and came first here," said Raghav. Being in the under-10 category doesna€™t mean they can't whack it long. They are just as precocious about their big plans. Asked who his idol was, Kanishk said, a€œTiger Woods actually, but I want to be better than him. If I work hard I can be better than him.a€ There was only hiccup when there was some confusion over who was to get the overall trophy but it was all sorted out soon. Delhi's Harinder Gupta was the one with a score of level par for four days.
